Chemical Peels for Acne: How Do They Work?
Acne is a common—and unpleasant—fact of life for many. The good news is that treatments are available, including chemical peels that can make skin look clearer and smoother. Read on to learn more.

Acne is no fun at any age, but during the teen and early adult years, at least you're part of the crowd, with about 85 percent of your peers suffering the same indignity. For some people, however, this issue follows them into adulthood, with more than 25 percent of women and 12 percent of men still reporting pimples into their 40s.

Fortunately, various treatments, including chemical peels, are available for smoother, clearer skin.

At Cascade Medspa & Laser Centre in Baxter, Minnesota, our experienced team uses their over 15 years of training and treatment skills to help you address all your aesthetic needs. Using state-of-the-art and FDA-approved treatments and products, we can do everything from helping you rejuvenate your appearance, including decreasing acne and acne scars, to using body contouring to address those stubborn fat deposits.

Acne

Acne occurs when the skin's pores become clogged with sebum, the oil that keeps our skin moist, and dead skin cells. Bacteria can grow in the pores as well. It most often appears on the face but can also form on the chest, back, and shoulders.

Risk factors

Certain risk factors can increase a person's chances of developing acne. They include hormones, having a family history, and some medications.

Other behaviors, such as stress and exposure to irritants like high humidity and pollution, can worsen it. Pressure from backpacks, form-fitting clothing, and helmets can also contribute. Diet may play a role as well.

Treatment

In addition to avoiding risk factors when possible, washing the area twice a day using a gentle cleanser and only light scrubbing is a good idea. Don't use oily makeup, sunscreen, or hair products; keep hair, hands, and phones away from the face. Finally, do not squeeze or pick at the pimples.

While these good habits and over-the-counter products can help, many people still need the assistance of a professional to see true improvement. Options can include special lotions, creams, medication, and procedures such as chemical peels.

Chemical peels

During a chemical peel, specialized compounds are applied to the skin to remove the top layer and exfoliate dead skin cells and bacteria that have built up. This leaves your skin looking smoother in texture and tone. The treatment can also unclog pores to help decrease the chances of future breakouts and encourage collagen production to fill in scars.

Peels come in light, medium, and deep depths depending on the issues that need addressing. They can effectively treat acne, scarring, wrinkles, and discolored skin. While each treatment plan is customized to the individual and their situation and goals, a light chemical peel is often used to address acne and a medium peel for acne scars.

If you're tired of seeing acne or scars every time you look in the mirror, a chemical peel could be right for you. Call our office at 218-454-9999 or click here to book an appointment today to learn more.
